The actor is currently playing George Shuttleworth in the ITV soap having joined back in 2020
Coronation Street star Tony Maudsley has confirmed his soap future with a show of support from fans. The actor is currently playing George Shuttleworth in the ITV soap.
Tony made his Weatherfield debut in 2020 as the son of Archie Shuttleworth, a local undertaker who ran Shuttleworth’s Independent Funeral Directors on Tile Street, who was also a companion of Blanche Hunt, and later became a close friend to Audrey Roberts.
George arrived on the street when he began doing business with Preston’s Petals after taking over Shuttleworth’s Independent Funeral Directors after his father died.
Then in January 2021, George and Gail Platt discovered that they shared great-great grandparents, Augustus and Fanny Page. Since then Corrie fans have seen George strike up a relationship with Eileen Grimshaw and is even now working with her son, Todd, at the Undertakers
And it’s now been revealed that there’s plenty more George to come as Tony confirmed he’d signed a new contract with the long-running show, which comes after a number of actors confirmed their own departures – including Tony’s on-screen partner.
Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, Tony said: “That’s George serving (and burying) the good folk of Weatherfield till at least July 2026. Happy days! #Corrie @itvcorrie #Shuttleworths.”
And fans were quick to respond. @RPJNORTH said: “Yeyyy! Congratulations Tony. Big love from the north east!” @GHovhanesian commented: “This is wonderful. Congratulations. Don’t leave us…”
@TwellyWatcher wrote: “Woohoo. Huge congratulations, Tony! Absolutely love George he’s one of my favourite characters.” @PatLovesTheatre replied: “Brilliant news, I’m so happy for you.” @mikepriestley13 posted: “Fantastic news Tony.”
@sargent65 shared: “Delighted to hear this!” @babybobbie08 added: “Brilliant. Was a bit worried with so many going and it would not be the same without george.”
Tony’s new contract comes amid the exit of his on-screen partner Sue Cleaver, who previously announced her plans to wave goodbye to Weatherfield after 25 years in the role of Eileen.
She said at the start of the year: “I’ve had 25 privileged years of working on Coronation Street. The door is still firmly open, but as I reached my 60th year I decided it was time to embrace change, look for new adventures and live fearlessly.”
